BENGALURU: The capital of Karnataka will be able to see a rare celestial phenomenon on Tuesday called Zero Shadow Day. At a particular time of the day, there will be no shadows cast over a full minute because of the position of the sun at that time.

Zero Shadow Day is a phenomenon when the Sun is exactly overhead on a particular point on the planet. Because of that, anything that is completely perpendicular to the ground, will not cast any shadow. This event will be experienced at the city of Bengaluru on April 25 at 12:17 PM.

The Indian Institute of Astrophysics located in Koramangala of the city will host a talk to explain the science behind this rare phenomenon to the public. This phenomenon takes place when the sun is directly above the equator meaning that the rays fall perpendicular to the surface, ensuring that anything that is completely vertical, will not cast any shadows on the surface.

“On April 25, 2023, the Sun reaches exactly overhead at (12:17 pm) in Bengaluru and at all places along the 130 north Latitude. The shadow of any vertical object would disappear at that instant. Zero Shadow Day occurs on different days in places away from 130 latitude,” announced the Jawaharlal Nehru Planetarium. It also mentioned that the science centres in coordination with the planetarium will organise various events across the state of Karnataka.

These steps have been taken to spread awareness as well as interest in the subject. Workshops, poster exhibitions, experiments and a lot more will be organised on the occasion.

The Astronomical Society of India mentioned that the phenomenon takes place between the Tropic of Cancer and the Tropic of Capricorn twice a year. The same phenomenon will be visible again in the city of Bengaluru on August 18 this year.
